Description

The Spectacles is a comedic satirical short story that follows a young man who refuses to wear glasses and falls in love at first sight with a mysterious woman he sees at the opera. Driven by obsession and romantic idealization, he rushes into a whirlwind courtship, only to discover at the end that his “beloved” is actually his extremely elderly great-great-grandmother in disguise. The story is a parody of romantic melodrama and “love at first sight” tropes, using exaggeration, irony, and a long comedic buildup leading to a sudden twist. It also satirizes vanity, perception, and how physical appearance (and refusal to correct one’s vision) can distort reality completely.
