The Forged Coupon

L
Leo Tolstoy
Fiction

Description

A single dishonest act passes from hand to hand like an infection. What begins as the use of a forged coupon - small, impulsive, almost trivial - slowly spreads outward through society, touching strangers who never meet yet become connected through greed, desperation, anger, fear, and violence. Each person believes their own actions are justified, temporary, or insignificant. But every choice leaves a trace, and every trace moves further than expected. Tolstoy structures the story like a chain reaction, showing how evil rarely arrives as something monstrous at first. It grows quietly through ordinary people, ordinary excuses, and ordinary weakness. Yet alongside corruption runs another possibility: that goodness can spread in the same way. “The Forged Coupon” becomes less a crime story than a moral map of human influence - how one action, however small, can alter countless lives.
