Description

David Swan is a philosophical short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne that explores how chance, timing, and unconscious decision-making shape human destiny more than deliberate action. The story follows David Swan, a young man who falls asleep by a roadside spring on his way to Boston. While he sleeps, several life-changing possibilities pass by him without his awareness: a wealthy couple considers making him their heir, a young woman almost meets him (and potentially alters his future through love and marriage), and criminals nearly rob or kill him. None of these possibilities become reality because David remains asleep and unaware of them. When he wakes, he simply continues his journey, oblivious to how many different futures briefly stood within reach.
