An Uncomfortable Bed

G
Guy de Maupassant
ComedyFiction

Description

A cautious traveler arrives at a country château expecting hospitality, but instead walks straight into what he is convinced is a carefully staged practical joke. Surrounded by exaggerated friendliness, suspicious laughter, and servants who seem to know more than they should, he becomes increasingly certain that he is the target of a cruel nighttime experiment. Every gesture feels loaded, every object potentially engineered for humiliation, and even the bed itself begins to resemble a trap waiting to activate. What follows is a descent into hypervigilance where imagination overtakes reason. In an attempt to outsmart his invisible tormentors, he transforms a simple bedroom into a defensive battlefield—only to discover that paranoia itself can manufacture chaos more effectively than any prank. Blending comedic tension, psychological misinterpretation, and situational irony, the story unfolds as a study in how fear distorts perception—turning harmless reality into elaborate conspiracy, and turning safety into self-inflicted absurdity.
