Description

“Negore, the Coward” is a short story by Jack London set in the harsh landscape of Alaska during the Russian colonial period. The narrative follows Negore, a young Indigenous hunter who is publicly shamed as “the coward” by his people and the woman he loves, Oona. Though accused of cowardice, Negore is revealed to have acted under complex moral pressure, sacrificing reputation and personal honor to protect his sick brother and later guiding Russian forces as part of a calculated plan of resistance. The story explores themes of honor, misunderstanding, survival ethics, colonial violence, and the conflict between public reputation and private sacrifice. In true London fashion, it blends adventure storytelling with psychological tension and moral ambiguity, culminating in a tragic but redemptive ending where Negore’s true bravery is finally recognized in death.
