Description
A quiet narrator recounts life in a rented room where ordinary domestic interactions slowly begin to reveal something unsettling beneath the surface of routine politeness. His landlady appears at first to be nothing more than a practical, slightly intrusive caretaker of the house - concerned with rent, cleanliness, and small domestic rules. But over time, her behavior begins to feel strangely inconsistent, as if she is constantly watching, measuring, and interpreting him in ways he cannot fully understand. As isolation deepens and minor incidents accumulate into a pattern, the narrator becomes increasingly uncertain whether the unease comes from her actions - or from his own increasingly fragile perception of reality. With Guy de Maupassant’s signature psychological ambiguity, the story explores paranoia, domestic confinement, and the thin boundary between observation and obsession in everyday life.
