Final Scene: A Year Later – Lykn’s Beach House, Revisited

The house is quieter now, no longer filled with the chaos of too many suitcases, echoing laughter, or the nervous tension of things unsaid. But it is full of warmth.

The group has gathered again — not for an escape, but for celebration.

Nut and Hong are first to arrive. They’ve grown quieter together, but in the way of people who no longer need to fill silence. Hong wraps his arms around Nut’s waist from behind as they stand in the kitchen, watching the others arrive through the window. Nut smiles softly.

“We’re different now,” Hong says, resting his chin on Nut’s shoulder.

“We’re stronger now,” Nut replies, turning to press a kiss into Hong’s temple.

They don’t say much more. They don’t need to.

Diamond and Lego arrive next, laughing. Lego is holding a paper bag full of pastries. Diamond, in sunglasses and a silk shirt, has a cigarette tucked behind one ear but doesn't light it. Not here.

“Still the hottest couple,” Nut teases as they come in.

Diamond smirks. “We try.”

Lego just shrugs, but his hand finds Diamond’s without thinking, their fingers weaving together with muscle memory. A year ago, he wouldn’t have done that in front of everyone. Now, he doesn’t even notice.

They’ve made a home together. A quiet apartment with records, warm lights, and Lego’s dance shoes scattered under the couch. They still haven’t said forever, but they’re already living it.

William and Est are last. They park down the road, like always, to get a bit of air before joining the others. Est’s hair is longer now. William’s arms are freckled from time in the sun.

They walk slowly.

“So,” Est says, nudging him, “Did you ever think we’d last this long?”

William glances sideways. “Every day I wasn’t sure.”

Est grins. “But we’re here.”

“We’re here,” William agrees.

They’ve had more fights since last summer. More misunderstandings. But they’ve also made a rule — never go to bed angry, and never stop trying to understand each other.

Inside, Tui is already on the couch, curled next to someone new. His name is Beam — a quiet, bookish guy who works in film editing and brought Tui hot tea when he was sick after a shoot. They met on a set. Tui had dropped his water bottle, and Beam had picked it up like it mattered.

Tonight, they sit close. Beam’s hand rests on Tui’s knee, patient and grounding.

Tui’s friends greet Beam with easy smiles and warm welcomes, but Hong catches something else too — something gentle in the way Tui leans into him. Not afraid. Not hiding.

Hong sits beside them for a while and murmurs, “I’m glad you found someone good.”

Tui nods, voice quiet. “Me too.”

Beam squeezes his knee, and Tui smiles with something unshakable — like peace.

Dinner is outside. The sky turns molten with dusk, streaked with coral and lavender. There’s wine and soft music, and someone’s dropped a game board on the table again.

They play. They laugh.

And later, they light a fire in the pit behind the house, barefoot in the sand, passing around marshmallows and telling old stories.

Est looks around at all of them, his chest full of something warm and heavy. “We made it,” he says softly.

“Through everything,” Lego adds.

William nudges him. “Even you tripping on the beach last year.”

Diamond throws a marshmallow at him.

Hong, content in Nut’s arms, watches the flames dance and thinks that even the hardest year led them here.

Even the pain had a purpose.

Even the distance was part of the journey.
