Scene — 2:07 a.m. Sathorn, outside a shuttered convenience store.

Headlights cut through the empty street, washing pale light over the sidewalk where Tui sat curled near a closed FamilyMart, knees tucked to his chest, arms wrapped around them. The soft hum of the car engine slowed, then stopped.

The passenger door clicked open before Tui could even lift his head.

“Tui.”

Nut’s voice was quiet. No judgment. No questions.

Tui looked up, eyes swollen, face pale, hoodie pulled tight around his frame like armor. He didn’t speak. He didn’t have to.

Nut crouched beside him, not touching, just — there.

“I’m sorry,” Tui said, barely audible.

“Don’t,” Nut said immediately. “You don’t have to be.”

Tui’s lips trembled. “I didn’t know who else to call.”

“I’m glad you called me.”

That undid something in Tui. He choked on a breath, tears sliding down again, silent. Nut didn’t try to stop them. Didn’t offer platitudes. Just waited. Present.

After a few moments, Nut stood and opened the car door wider. “Come on.”

Tui nodded slowly and got up, still barefoot, holding his shoes awkwardly. Nut reached for them.

“I’ll carry those.”

Tui hesitated, then handed them over. It felt like handing over some small part of the weight he’d been carrying.

Inside the car, it was warm. Quiet. The seatbelt clicked into place with a soft sound that felt bigger than it was.

Nut didn’t ask what happened. He didn’t look over, didn’t press. He just started the engine and drove.

But after a few minutes, his voice came, low and steady.

“You’re safe now.”

Tui turned his face toward the window, one tear trailing down his cheek. He nodded, though his voice had left him completely.

The car rolled on, cutting through the dark city streets. Behind them, whatever had happened was still too heavy to name. But in the passenger seat, next to someone who had come without question, something shifted — quiet, small, but real.

Hope didn’t arrive loud.

It came in a car at 2 a.m.

With someone who showed up.

Scene — 2:36 a.m. In the car, nearing the group’s apartment.

The city passed by in low hums and flickers — streetlights reflected in the windshield, shadows of empty bus stops and shuttered cafés sliding past.

Nut glanced sideways as he turned onto the familiar street leading to their building. “We’re almost there.”

Tui flinched.

“Can we not?” he said quickly, his voice tight. “I mean… I don’t want to go in. Not like this.”

Nut didn’t respond right away.

Tui stared straight ahead, his fingers clutching the edge of his hoodie. “If Lego sees me… or William… I just — can’t. I don’t want them to ask.”

His voice cracked. “I don’t want them to look at me and know something’s wrong.”

Nut nodded, as if he’d already expected it. Quietly, he flicked on his blinker and turned at the next intersection — away from home.

Tui blinked. “Where are we — ?”

“My place,” Nut said simply. “It’s empty tonight. You can rest. Shower. Sleep.”

Tui swallowed hard. “You don’t have to — ”

“I know,” Nut said. “But I want to.”

Tui fell silent, his throat aching with unspoken gratitude. He turned to look out the window again, hiding the new tears that formed — not from pain, this time, but from relief.

He didn’t say another word.

He didn’t need to.

Scene — 3:04 a.m. Nut’s apartment.

The door closed with a soft click, locking the outside world away.

Tui stood just inside the entry, unsure of what to do with himself. He clutched his shoes like a shield. The hallway light cast a warm, golden hush over the small apartment — soft couch, unmade bed, a jacket draped over a chair, a guitar leaning in the corner.

Safe. Quiet. Unjudging.

Nut moved past him gently, setting Tui’s shoes by the door.

“You want tea?” he asked, already heading toward the kitchenette.

Tui shook his head. “Just… water, maybe.”

Nut nodded. “Okay.”

While Nut moved around the kitchen, Tui wandered slowly into the room. His steps were quiet, uncertain. He touched nothing. Just stood there, hoodie sleeves covering his hands, arms drawn in close. The weight of everything he’d been carrying still pressed into his shoulders.

Nut came back with a glass. “Here.”

“Thanks.”

Tui took it, his hands trembling just slightly, and sat down on the edge of the couch. He didn’t drink. Just held the glass like an anchor.

Nut sat across from him, not too close, not too far.

Silence stretched between them — easy, unforced.

Then Tui said, quietly, “You’re not going to ask?”

Nut’s eyes were soft. “Not unless you want me to.”

A long pause.

Tui nodded. Not because he wanted to talk, but because he finally believed that Nut meant it.

“I don’t want to talk,” Tui whispered. “I just… can I stay here? For a little?”

Nut leaned back in his chair. “You can stay as long as you need.”

The glass in Tui’s hands began to shake again. He quickly set it down on the table and brought his hands to his face.

He didn’t sob. He didn’t fall apart.

He just breathed — shaky, uneven, real.

Then, finally, he leaned forward and let his forehead rest on the edge of the table. As if holding his own head up had become too much. He stayed like that.

Nut moved without a word. He got up, crossed the room, and sat beside Tui — not touching, just close enough to be felt. A quiet offering.

After a moment, Tui tilted sideways, just enough to rest his head lightly against Nut’s shoulder.

A single, barely audible breath left him. Like something surrendering.

“I didn’t think anyone would come,” he said.

Nut closed his eyes.

“I always will.”
