The university studio always smelled the same in the late afternoon — oil paint, turpentine, dust warmed by sunlight. The tall windows caught the day at an angle that softened everything it touched. Skin tones looked kinder here. Shadows behaved.

Haoren liked it that way.

He stood near the long table, black shirt buttoned to the collar, sleeves rolled to his forearms. The thin tattoos on his hands moved when he spoke — palette, brushes — alive only when he was. His voice was calm, unhurried, carrying just enough authority to quiet a room without asking for it.

“Don’t chase perfection,” he said. “Chase honesty.”

Lihen sat three easels away, charcoal smudged on his fingers, eyes fixed on the model’s form. He had been Haoren’s student for two years. Long enough to know the cadence of his lectures. Long enough to recognize the rare days when the professor wore white instead of black. Long enough to feel the quiet ache that came every time Haoren’s gaze passed over him — never lingering, never avoiding, always exact.

Lihen told himself he understood what he wanted.

He painted naked women because it made sense. Because curves were a language he had learned early. Because softness felt safer than questions. His canvases were good — everyone said so. Careful lines. Respectful distance. Desire contained and labeled.

And yet, when Haoren walked closer, the air changed.

Vanilla — soft, warm, impossible to ignore. It threaded through the studio, settling against Lihen’s senses before he could stop it. His Alpha instincts stirred and then stalled, confused by the Enigma calm that carried no command and all gravity. Lihen’s pencil paused mid-line.

“Lihen,” Haoren said, gently.

The sound of his name always landed differently. As if it had been practiced.

“Yes, professor?”

Haoren leaned in, not close enough to touch. Never that close. “You’re holding back,” he said. “Your lines are careful where they don’t need to be.”

Lihen swallowed. He nodded, because that was easier than explaining the pressure in his chest, the strange heat behind his eyes. Easier than admitting that every time Haoren looked at his work, it felt like being seen in the wrong light — too bright, too revealing.

“I like the way you study form,” Haoren continued. “But you’re painting what you think you should want.”

The words stayed.

Lihen watched Haoren’s hands as he spoke, the tattoos shifting with each movement. Those hands had taught him anatomy, proportion, restraint. They had never touched him. That absence felt deliberate. Almost cruel.

“I do want it,” Lihen said quickly, then quieter, “I think.”

Haoren’s gaze softened — not warm, not cold. Deep. As if he were listening to something unspoken. “Sometimes,” he said, “what we think we want is just what we’re not afraid of yet.”

The model shifted. A chair creaked. The world continued.

Lihen turned back to his canvas. The woman he was painting looked the same as she had moments ago — and suddenly, entirely wrong. The line of her shoulder felt empty. The space between shadows felt unfinished. He erased, frustrated, charcoal dusting the floor like ash.

Haoren stepped away. He always did.

Two years of this: closeness without crossing, silence that said too much, a love neither of them named — not even in the privacy of their own thoughts. Haoren stayed behind his role, his age, his Enigma stillness. Lihen stayed behind definitions that felt safer than truth.

Outside, the light faded. Inside, something had already begun.

Neither of them would admit it yet.

But the studio knew.
The air knew.
And the smoke — quiet, patient — already knew their names.
