It happened after hours.

That was how most mistakes at MARS were made — when the building emptied, when voices stopped echoing down the halls, when the rules loosened their grip just enough to pretend they weren’t there. The lights in the office dimmed automatically, one section at a time, leaving pockets of shadow that felt private even when they weren’t.

Po stayed.

He always did.

He wandered with his camera slung low, not filming now, just carrying it like a habit he couldn’t break. The day’s footage sat heavy in his bag — Jun’s missed step, Dylan’s hovering hand, Pepper’s smile fading between messages. Moments that didn’t know yet what they meant.

In the rehearsal studio, the mirrors were dark, reflecting only vague shapes. Music played softly from someone’s abandoned speaker, a slow instrumental track looping without intention.

Po stepped inside.

Thame was already there.

He stood near the mirror, jacket off, sleeves rolled up, tie loosened and hanging uselessly from his collar. Under the low lights, his usual composure looked thinner, worn at the edges. He turned when he heard Po’s footsteps, relief flickering across his face before he could stop it.

“You’re still here,” Po said softly.

“So are you,” Thame replied.

They smiled at each other — small, careful smiles. The kind people used when they were afraid of saying the wrong thing.

Po leaned against the wall, camera forgotten. “I needed quiet.”

Thame nodded. “Me too.”

Silence settled between them, heavy but not uncomfortable. Thame watched Po the way he always did — like he was memorizing something fragile. Po felt it, that familiar pull, the awareness that made his breath shallow and his thoughts blur.

“You shouldn’t film everything,” Thame said suddenly.

Po tilted his head. “Why?”

“Because some things,” Thame said, voice lower now, “change when you try to keep them.”

Po swallowed. “I don’t want to lose them.”

Thame stepped closer. Not touching. Just close enough for the air to feel different. “You won’t.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I do,” Thame said quietly. “Because I’m right here.”

Po laughed — not happy, not sad. Just overwhelmed. “You make it sound simple.”

“It isn’t,” Thame admitted. “But neither is pretending.”

The music shifted, the loop restarting. Po didn’t realize he’d moved until his back brushed the mirror. Thame followed, close now, close enough that Po could see the faint crease between Thame’s brows, the way his jaw tightened when he was holding something back.

Po’s heart pounded.

“This isn’t—” Po started.

Thame’s hand lifted, hesitated, then rested against the mirror beside Po’s head. Not touching him. Not yet. “Tell me to stop.”

Po didn’t.

The line was crossed not with a kiss, but with breath.

With the space between them disappearing. With Po’s fingers curling into Thame’s sleeve like they were already familiar with the motion. With Thame leaning in, forehead resting briefly against Po’s temple — an intimacy so quiet it felt more dangerous than anything else.

When they kissed, it was soft.

Almost careful.

Like they were both afraid the world would shatter if they pressed too hard. Thame’s lips were warm, steady. Po exhaled against them, years of restraint dissolving in that single moment. His hand slid up Thame’s chest without permission, feeling the rapid heartbeat beneath.

They broke apart quickly — too quickly.

Po laughed breathlessly, eyes wide. “We shouldn’t have done that.”

Thame didn’t step back. “I know.”

They stood there, bodies still angled toward each other, breath uneven. The mirror behind them reflected everything — not faces clearly, just shapes too close to deny.
