Elara Thornlace hated festivals—especially ones where nothing ever changed.

Every year in the mountain village of Windmere, lanterns were strung like stars across rooftops, vendors sold candied rootfruit and spun-glass trinkets, and a parade of townsfolk in woolen robes marched past the ancient clocktower to honor the so-called miracle that it had never, in four hundred years, stopped ticking. It was the Timekeeping Festival, a celebration of consistency, tradition, and repetition—three things Elara had no patience for.

She ducked under a garland of dried sunflowers as she slipped away from the crowd, her boots crunching over frost-speckled cobblestone. The air held the crispness of first snow, though none had yet fallen. Children shrieked with laughter in the square, their voices echoing against the mountain cliffs, while elders lit incense and whispered offerings into copper bells. But Elara’s gaze remained locked on the clocktower that rose like a spire of shadow and brass at the center of the village.

No one entered the tower. Ever.

The only door had long since rusted shut. No keyhole, no handle, just a warped wooden slab at its base, sealed by time—or so the legends claimed. And yet, as the bells rang the noon hour, something inside her chest stirred. A quiet pull, like the shifting of a gear in her bones.

Her hand brushed the moss-covered base of the tower as she rounded the far side, away from the onlookers. And that’s when she saw it.

A seam.

No wider than a thread, barely visible unless you were looking for it. It ran in a perfect circle along the foundation, just beneath an iron plate shaped like a sunburst. She pressed against the seam without thinking. The metal disk let out a soft click, and the ground beneath her trembled.

Elara stumbled back just as a section of stone receded into the earth, revealing a dark passageway lit by a faint amber glow.

The clocktower had opened.

Her breath caught. She looked back—no one had seen. Music played on. Bells rang. Life continued.

And so, with her heart pounding like a runaway pendulum, Elara stepped through the hidden door and into the guts of the tower.

The door closed behind her with a whisper.
