Spring always arrived quietly.
It slipped under doors, curled through open windows, settled in the hollow of the collarbone before anyone noticed the warmth. The dorm’s balcony was drowning in it — white curtains breathing in and out with the wind, sunlight spilling like honey across the wooden floor.

Dylan was the first to open the window that morning.
The scent hit him instantly — cherry blossoms from the street below, damp earth, something sweet and green and alive. He closed his eyes for a moment, letting it sink in.

Behind him, Jun shifted in bed.
“You’re letting the pollen in,” Jun muttered, voice rough with sleep.
Dylan didn’t turn around. “You’re letting the season pass.”
Silence.
Then the rustle of sheets.

Jun padded across the room, hair messy, shirt hanging open at the throat. He stopped just close enough that Dylan could feel his presence without touching him.
It was always like that with them.
Close.
Almost.
“You like it that much?” Jun asked quietly.
Dylan nodded. “It smells like something about to happen.”
Jun’s jaw tightened at that.

Outside, petals drifted down like slow snow. One landed on the balcony railing, trembling in the wind. Dylan leaned forward slightly to watch it — and Jun’s hand lifted, instinctively hovering near Dylan’s waist.
He didn’t touch.
He never touched first.
“You’ll catch a cold,” Jun said, softer now.
“It’s warm.”
“It’s deceptive.”

Dylan finally turned. They were too close — closer than usual — and the air between them felt thicker than the scent of blossoms.
Jun smelled like soap and sleep and something deeper beneath that — something that didn’t belong to spring at all. Something steady.
“You’re always scared of beautiful things,” Dylan murmured.
Jun’s eyes darkened. “No.”
“Then what are you scared of?”

The wind pushed harder through the window. Curtains wrapped around them like ghostly hands before falling back again.
Jun’s fingers brushed Dylan’s wrist this time — barely there. Testing.
“I’m scared,” Jun said slowly, “that you’ll bloom somewhere I can’t follow.”
The words hung in the air.
Dylan’s breath hitched.
He hadn’t expected that.
Spring had a way of pulling confessions out of people like roots from soft soil.

“You think I’d leave?” Dylan asked.
Jun didn’t answer immediately. His thumb slid, just slightly, against the inside of Dylan’s wrist. The pulse there was wild.
“I think,” Jun said quietly, “you’re meant for big skies. Not small balconies.”
Dylan laughed softly. “You’re here.”
Jun swallowed.
“That’s exactly what I’m afraid of.”

The tension wasn’t loud. It wasn’t desperate. It was something slower — like vines curling around each other, tightening day by day without noticing until breathing felt different.
A petal drifted inside and landed against Dylan’s shoulder.
Jun reached up.
This time he touched.
His fingers brushed the petal away, but lingered against Dylan’s skin. Warm. Careful. Uncertain.
Dylan’s voice dropped. “You don’t have to watch me bloom from far away.”
Jun’s hand slid from shoulder to collarbone. Not possessive. Not yet.
“Spring ends,” Jun whispered.
“So does winter.”

Their eyes locked.
The world outside felt too bright. Too alive. As if the entire season was holding its breath.
Jun leaned closer — not enough to kiss, just enough that their foreheads almost touched.

“You smell like flowers,” Jun murmured.
“You smell like you’re about to ruin them.”

A faint smile tugged at Jun’s mouth.
“Maybe I just don’t want them stealing you from me.”
Dylan’s heart pounded so loudly he was sure Jun could feel it.
“Then don’t let go.”

For a second — just one fragile second — Jun hesitated.
Then his hand slid fully around Dylan’s waist.
Not hovering.
Holding.
The balcony felt smaller. The world felt closer. Spring pressed in from every direction — petals, warmth, distant laughter from the street below.

Jun’s voice was barely audible.
“If I hold you now… I won’t pretend it’s just the season.”
Dylan tilted his head slightly, breath brushing Jun’s lips.
“Good.”

The wind rose again, carrying the scent of blossoms through the room.
And this time, when Jun closed the distance —
it wasn’t because spring told him to.
It was because he was done being afraid of watching something beautiful bloom without him.
