1. The Love I Could Never Keep

Chapter 1

Chapter 1 The Day You Left Me

The rain had been falling since evening.

I sat alone beside the window, watching the drops slide slowly down the glass. The whole city looked blurred behind the rain, but somehow my phone screen was perfectly clear.

I had been staring at it for almost an hour.

Waiting.

Waiting for one message.

Waiting for her name to appear.

Her last message was still open on my screen.

“I’m sorry. I can’t stay anymore.”

Six words.

Only six words.

But those six words felt heavier than anything I had ever carried.

I read them again.

And again.

Maybe I was hoping that if I looked at them enough times, the words would change.

They didn't.

I typed a reply.

“Why?”

I stared at the message for several seconds before deleting it.

Then I typed another.

“Please don't leave.”

Deleted.

Another one.

“Did I do something wrong?”

Deleted again.

I didn't know what to say.

How do you ask someone to stay when their heart has already decided to leave?

I placed the phone on the table and leaned back in my chair.

My room was silent.

Too silent.

There was a time when silence never bothered me. But that night, every second felt like someone was whispering her name inside my head.

I remembered the first day I met her.

She had smiled at me as if she already knew me.

It wasn't a special moment for anyone else. People were walking past us, cars were moving through the streets, and the world was busy with its own problems.

But for me, everything had stopped.

She looked at me and smiled.

And somehow, that small smile became the beginning of everything.

We started talking.

At first, it was just simple conversations.

How was your day?

Did you eat?

Why are you awake so late?

Then those small conversations became hours.

Hours became nights.

Nights became memories.

And without realizing it, I became attached to her.

She became the first person I wanted to talk to when I woke up and the last person I wanted to say goodnight to.

I told her things I had never told anyone.

My fears.

My dreams.

My loneliness.

I gave her the parts of my heart that I had always kept hidden.

And she promised she would never hurt me.

“I'll always be here,” she once told me.

I believed her.

That was my mistake.

Maybe love doesn't hurt because someone leaves.

Maybe love hurts because you believed they would never leave.

I picked up my phone again.

No new message.

I opened our old conversation and started scrolling.

There were hundreds of messages.

Her jokes.

My stupid replies.

Our late-night conversations.

The little arguments we used to have.

The moments when she would disappear for a few minutes and then return with an apology.

I smiled for a second.

Then my smile disappeared.

Because every beautiful memory had suddenly become painful.

I stopped at one message.

“You'll never lose me.”

My eyes filled with tears.

I whispered, “But you already left.”

The room became blurry.

I wiped my face quickly, almost embarrassed even though nobody was there to see me.

I had always believed that crying made a person weak.

That night, I understood something different.

Sometimes tears are simply the heart's way of saying, “I can't carry this anymore.”

I wanted to hate her.

I really did.

It would have been easier if I could tell myself that she was a bad person.

But she wasn't.

She was the person who had made some of my darkest days brighter.

She was the person who had made me believe that maybe, just maybe, I could be loved.

How could I hate someone who had once been my entire world?

I couldn't.

So instead, I blamed myself.

Maybe I wasn't enough.

Maybe I loved too much.

Maybe I expected too much.

Maybe somewhere along the way, I had become a burden.

The thoughts kept coming.

One after another.

And every thought made the wound deeper.

Outside, the rain became heavier.

I stood up and walked toward the window.

Cold air touched my face when I opened it.

For a moment, I closed my eyes.

I imagined her standing beside me.

I imagined hearing her voice.

I imagined her saying, “I'm not going anywhere.”

But when I opened my eyes, there was nobody there.

Only the rain.

Only the darkness.

Only me.

I looked at the sky and whispered, “Why did you let me love her if I was never going to keep her?”

There was no answer.

Maybe some questions are never meant to have answers.

That night, I didn't sleep.

I stayed awake until morning, watching the darkness slowly disappear.

When the first light entered the room, I looked at my phone one last time.

Still nothing.

I opened her profile.

My finger hovered over the screen.

I could block her.

I could delete everything.

I could pretend she never existed.

But I couldn't.

Not yet.

My heart wasn't ready.

So I locked my phone and placed it beside me.

“I hope you're happy,” I whispered.

The words hurt more than I expected.

Because somewhere deep inside, I still wanted her to come back.

Even after everything.

Even after she had broken me.

A strange thing about love is that sometimes your heart continues to choose the person who chose to leave you.

I didn't know what would happen next.

I didn't know that this goodbye would change me.

I didn't know that the boy who had once believed in forever would slowly become someone who trusted no one.

All I knew was that I had lost the person I loved.

And there was nothing I could do to bring her back.

That morning, I made a promise to myself.

I would never beg anyone to stay again.

If someone wanted to leave, I would let them.

Even if it destroyed me.

Even if I had to smile while my heart was breaking.

Because sometimes loving someone means knowing when to let them go.

And sometimes the hardest goodbye is the one you never wanted to say.

She left my life that night.

But her memories stayed.

And I was left with a broken heart, a thousand unanswered questions, and one painful truth:

She was the love I could never keep.
