Two weeks passed. The studio became a tomb of unfinished ideas. Lin Yi had stopped burning sandalwood; the sweetness felt like a lie. Instead, he lived in the scent of turpentine and rain.

The canvas he had started on that night sat in the center of the room. It was no longer white. It was a riot of obsidian, fractured gold, and a haunting, translucent teal. It was the color of a man who was half-ghost, half-fire.

The doorbell didn't ring this time. Instead, there was a quiet scratching, like a cat at the wood. When Lin Yi opened it, the hallway was empty, but a small, rectangular box sat on the floor.

He took it inside. It was an old tin, the edges rusted a burnt sienna. Inside was a single, unlit clove cigarette and a small glass vial of oil. He opened the vial, and the room was instantly flooded with the scent of crushed pine needles and rain-soaked earth — the scent of Hangzhou.

There was a note, written in a cramped, elegant hand:

"I found the color you were looking for. It wasn't in the light or the smoke. It was in the silence after the fire goes out. I'm standing by the river. The water is jade, just like you remembered."

Lin Yi grabbed his coat, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He didn't lock the door. He ran down the stairs, out into the street where the world was a blur of racing reds and flashing greens.

He reached the riverbank as the sun began to set, turning the water into a sheet of molten copper. Xiao He was there, leaning against the stone railing. He wasn't smoking. He was just breathing.

When Xiao He turned, the "ghost" was gone. His eyes were clear, reflecting the deep orange of the horizon. He smelled of nothing but the wind and the river.

"You finished it," Xiao He said, looking at Lin Yi’s paint-stained hands.

"No," Lin Yi panted, stepping into his space, reclaiming the warmth. "A painting is a memory. But this — the way the light is hitting your face right now — this is a beginning."

He reached out, and this time, his hands weren't shaking. He pulled Xiao He close, burying his face in the crook of his neck. There was no smoke, no ash, only the salt of skin and the vibrant, living pulse of a heart that had decided to stop haunting and start staying.

The sky above them turned a deep, permanent plum, and for the first time in a long time, Lin Yi didn't feel the need to reach for a brush.
