The air in Lin Yi’s studio always smelled of two things: the earthy, metallic tang of oil paints and the sharp, medicinal sting of Double Happiness cigarettes. It was a scent that clung to the heavy velvet curtains and lived in the fibers of his oversized sweaters.

He was staring at a canvas that refused to speak back to him — a void of unprimed white — when the buzzer rang. It was a jagged sound, cutting through the low hum of the city’s evening traffic. When he opened the door, Xiao He was there, looking like a blurred charcoal sketch against the cobalt blue twilight of the hallway.

"You’re late," Lin Yi said, his voice raspy from hours of silence.

"The metro stalled under the river," Xiao He replied. He stepped inside, bringing the outside world with him — the scent of damp concrete, cold wind, and a hint of expensive, bitter bergamot orange. He didn't wait for an invitation to light up. The flame of his lighter flickered, casting a brief, burning orange glow over his sharp cheekbones before settling into the dull red ember of a cigarette.

Lin Yi watched the smoke curl between them, a translucent grey ribbon in the dim light. "You look tired, He-He. There’s too much bruised violet under your eyes."

Xiao He let out a slow exhale, the smoke obscuring his expression like a veil. "It’s the city. It’s draining all the primary colors out of me. I feel like a lithograph left out in the rain."

He walked over to the window, leaning his forehead against the cool glass. Outside, the streetlights were a bleeding cadmium yellow, distorted by the drizzle.

"Stay still," Lin Yi whispered, reaching for a palette knife. "Right there. The way the light hits your shoulder... it’s the only warm thing in this room."

"I'm not a muse, Lin Yi," Xiao He said, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with a hidden, jagged grief. "I'm a ghost. There's a difference."

"Then let me paint the haunting," Lin Yi replied. He stepped closer, the scent of the cigarette smoke mixing with the faint, woody aroma of the sandalwood incense burning on the desk. For a moment, the space between them vanished, leaving only the sound of their synchronized breathing and the distant, muffled pulse of a night market.

Xiao He turned his head, his eyes searching Lin Yi’s face. "If you finish this, what’s left for us? Once it’s on the canvas, it’s a memory. And memories are just things we've agreed to lose."

Lin Yi reached out, his thumb brushing a stray flake of ash from Xiao He’s collar. "Some things are too heavy to carry. You have to put them somewhere so your hands are free to hold something else."
