Spring doesn’t arrive loudly.
It slips in through half-open windows and unsettled hearts.

Jun notices it before anyone else.
It’s in the way the dorm balcony smells different that morning — not winter-clean, not sharp and metallic, but soft. Alive. Like something is waking up. He stands there barefoot, leaning against the railing, watching pale sunlight stretch over the city. The sky isn’t blue yet. It’s that fragile in-between color — peach diluted with milk.

Behind him, the sliding door opens.
Dylan.
Jun doesn’t turn immediately, but he feels him. Dylan always carries a scent — something woody and warm, mixed with the faintest trace of citrus soap. Today, though, there’s something else. Something lighter. Like crushed petals.

“You’re up early,” Dylan says.
His voice sounds different in spring. Softer. Less guarded.
Jun turns.

Dylan is wearing a thin cream sweater, sleeves pushed up, gray hair slightly messy from sleep. The morning light makes it almost silver. There’s color in his cheeks, faint but there — the kind that winter never gives.
“It smells like flowers,” Jun says.
Dylan steps closer to the railing beside him. “There aren’t any up here.”
“Not here,” Jun murmurs. “Outside.”

They look down at the street. A small flower stall has appeared on the corner overnight — buckets of tulips, hyacinths, tiny daisies trembling in the breeze. A woman arranges them with careful fingers.
The colors look unreal after months of gray.
Yellow like laughter. Pink like flushed skin. Violet like secrets.
Dylan’s shoulder brushes Jun’s.
It shouldn’t feel like lightning.
But it does.

Later, they walk.
The air is warmer, but still carries a cool edge that slips under collars. Jun wears black, as usual — long coat, dark shirt — but the sunlight softens him, turns his edges gold.

Dylan walks half a step ahead, hands in his pockets. People glance at him. They always do.
There’s a park not far from their place. Cherry trees line the path — not fully bloomed, but close. Buds swelling, trembling on branches like they’re holding their breath.
Jun watches Dylan instead of the trees.
The wind picks up.
Petals from an early blossom break loose and scatter between them.

One lands in Dylan’s hair.
Jun stops walking.
Dylan turns. “What?”
Jun steps closer. Slowly. His hand lifts without permission.
He brushes the petal from Dylan’s hair.
But his fingers don’t leave.
They slide — barely — against Dylan’s temple. The contact is featherlight. Accidental enough to pretend it was nothing.
Neither of them pretends.

There’s tension in spring.
It’s not winter’s heavy silence. It’s something sharper. A waiting.
Dylan’s eyes drop to Jun’s lips for half a second too long.
“You’re staring,” Dylan says, but his voice isn’t teasing.
Jun’s jaw tightens. “You smell different.”
Dylan blinks. “What?”
“Like flowers.”

A pause.
Dylan laughs quietly. “It’s the same soap.”
Jun shakes his head. “No.”
It’s not soap.
It’s heat under skin. It’s thawing. It’s the way Dylan’s pulse flickers at his throat, visible above the collar of that light sweater.

The park is filled with color — children running with bright balloons, old couples feeding birds, tulips planted in neat red and white rows. Everything feels like it’s blooming except the space between them.
That’s still tight. Coiled.

Dylan steps closer again.
“So,” he says softly, “what does spring smell like to you?”
Jun doesn’t look away.
“You.”

The word hangs between them.
Dangerous.
Dylan inhales sharply.

Another petal falls — this one landing on Jun’s shoulder. Dylan reaches up to remove it, mirroring what Jun did earlier.
His fingers linger.
Longer.
Jun feels it everywhere.

The world around them is loud with color — pink trees, green grass, blue sky finally breaking through — but the space between them narrows to skin and breath and the faint scent of blossoms drifting through the air.
Dylan’s hand slides from Jun’s shoulder to his collar.
Just gripping fabric.
Not pulling.
Yet.
“Jun,” Dylan murmurs.
It’s a warning.
Or a request.

Jun steps forward instead of answering.
Their foreheads almost touch.
The air smells like cherry blossoms now — soft, powdery, sweet in a way that feels almost too delicate for the tension vibrating through them.
Spring is about beginnings.
But beginnings are terrifying.
Because once something blooms, it cannot go back to being a bud.

Jun’s hand finds Dylan’s waist.
Slow.
Careful.
Testing.
Dylan exhales like he’s been holding it all winter.
They don’t kiss.
Not yet.
Instead, they stand there under half-open blossoms, surrounded by color, by scent, by the restless promise of something about to break open.

Dylan’s fingers curl in Jun’s coat.
“Don’t make this another season we ignore,” he whispers.
Jun’s answer isn’t words.
It’s the way he pulls Dylan just a fraction closer — enough for their lips to brush without fully claiming.

A promise instead of a confession.
Around them, petals fall.
Spring has begun.
