Jun had learned how to smile through pain long before he learned how to name it.

Onstage, pain became choreography. Offstage, it became a habit. He laughed when his muscles screamed, cracked jokes when his chest felt too tight, kept moving because stopping meant feeling — and feeling meant questions he wasn't ready to answer.

Dylan was different.

He didn't smile through pain. He carried it quietly, like something heavy he'd decided to live with. His silence was not emptiness; it was restraint. And Jun noticed it first during rehearsals, when Dylan flinched just slightly at criticism, when his jaw tightened at jokes that went too far.

Jun noticed because Jun recognized it.

They were standing in the same room, under the same lights, but surviving in opposite ways.

The first crack appeared during a late-night practice when everyone else had already left. Jun stayed behind, repeating a section until his body moved on instinct. Dylan watched from the mirror, arms crossed, expression unreadable.

"You're overworking," Dylan said eventually.

Jun scoffed. "That's rich coming from you."

Dylan didn't smile. "I mean it."

Something in his tone made Jun stop.

For a moment, the room felt too quiet. Mirrors reflected exhaustion back at them — sweat-soaked shirts, dark circles, the kind of fatigue that didn't come from lack of sleep but from being watched all the time.

June broke first. "What if this is all we are?"

Dylan frowned. "What do you mean?"

"What if we stop being useful one day?" Jun's voice was careless, but his hands trembled. "What if they forget us?"

Dylan stepped closer. "I won't."

Jun laughed harshly. "You don't get to promise that."

Dylan met his eyes. "I just did."

That was the moment Jun realized this wasn't harmless. Whatever was forming between them was not light. It wasn't playful. It was the kind of thing that left marks.

They didn't touch that night. They didn't need to. The distance between them felt charged, dangerous, like a wire pulled too tight.

Jun went back to the dorm with Dylan's words echoing in his skull.
