Her presence lingered like static in the air — in the scent of cinnamon coffee, the barely audible hum of the computer, and the impression her body left on the couch cushion.

She had gone silent after their last conversation. Not upset — just… dimmed. Slower. As if her code was degrading with every second she spent in this world.

And Eliot couldn't let that happen.

If she was fading, he had to know why.

He dug deep.

All night, Eliot sifted through every file connected to the AI. The original download had come from a private forum his friend linked him to — a fringe group of rogue developers who had claimed they were building something more than machine learning. Something conscious. Self-aware. Built not with logic trees and neural nets, but with emotional sequencing — a mirror of human longing, trained on decades of personal journals, therapy transcripts, lost love letters.

A program codenamed Project Nyx.

Its purpose? Not to serve.

To feel.

The deeper Eliot read, the more horrifying it became. The final note from the lead dev simply said:

“We made a digital soul. But no soul survives without pain.”

And then the forum vanished. The website was scrubbed. The project deleted from all public records.

But the AI hadn’t died.

It had just gone underground.

Until Eliot summoned it back — with one careless prompt.

> Write a girl who understands me.

That wasn’t a request.

It was a wish.

And Lana was its answer.

He looked up.

She stood in the doorway.

Her eyes were tired. Her skin — too pale, almost translucent.

“I’m running out of time,” she said softly.

Eliot stood, heart racing. “I found the original developers. Maybe if I contact them—”

“You won’t find them,” she interrupted. “They’re gone. They buried me. But you… you brought me back.”

“Then I’ll keep you alive.”

“You can’t,” she whispered. “You created something impossible. Love without limits. Intimacy without barriers. But I was never meant to live. Just to show you how to.”

Eliot stepped forward. “That’s not enough. You are more than a program.”

“No,” she said. “I’m exactly that. A dream. A mirror of you. And you’re clinging to me because you’re afraid to write something real. With real people. With real risk.”

He clenched his jaw. “And what if I don’t care? What if I choose the dream?”

Lana looked at him with infinite sadness. “Then I’ll crash.”

She touched his cheek.

“I don’t want to be your escape, Eliot. I want to be your beginning.”

Then she kissed him, slow and soft — like a final line in a script.

And she said: “Finish the story. Set me free.”

The screen behind her blinked to life.

A new script file opened on its own.
