Dressing for Your Discipline

The tips from the previous chapter apply to every audition. Now let's look at what works best for each type of audition.

Dance Auditions

For dance auditions, the judges need to clearly see your body lines and movements. Choose clothes that fit well but still let you move freely.

Good choices:

• fitted T-shirts,

• athletic tops,

• simple long-sleeve shirts,

• leggings,

• joggers,

• cargo pants,

• comfortable sneakers.

Avoid clothes that are too baggy because they can hide your movements. Before the audition, dance in your full outfit to make sure nothing slips, rides up, or feels uncomfortable.

A tip: bring an extra T-shirt. After warming up or dancing, changing into a dry shirt will help you feel much fresher and more comfortable.

Also avoid large earrings, necklaces, bracelets, or other accessories. They can get caught on your clothes or hair while you're dancing, which can be painful and distract you during your performance. They can also fall off or limit your movement.

It's always safer to keep accessories simple or leave them at home.

Vocal Auditions

Vocal auditions usually don't involve much movement. The judges will spend most of the time looking at your face and listening to your voice.

Choose neat, comfortable clothes that don't distract from your performance.

Good choices:

• plain T-shirts,

• blouses,

• button-up shirts,

• sweaters,

• simple skirts,

• comfortable pants,

• clean sneakers or flats.

Avoid tight clothes that make it harder to breathe. You should be able to take a full, deep breath comfortably.

Also avoid large earrings, bracelets, or necklaces that can make noise while you sing.

Rap Auditions

Rap auditions give you a little more freedom to show your personal style. A clean streetwear look usually works well.

Good choices:

• oversized or fitted T-shirts,

• open shirts,

• hoodies,

• cargo pants,

• jeans that don't restrict movement,

• clean sneakers.

Don't wear clothes with offensive words, inappropriate graphics, or huge logos. And remember the most important thing: your personality should stand out - not your outfit.

Be Ready for Anything

Even if you're only planning to sing, the judges might ask you to dance. If you're auditioning as a dancer, they might ask you to sing.

Always choose an outfit that allows you to do both. It's much better to be overprepared than surprised.
