"You left a hole in the world, Mr. Thorne," the man said. His voice was flat, devoid of the emotional resonance Elias used to be able to detect.

"I prefer to call it a fresh start," Elias replied, stirring his black coffee.

"The vacuum you created is already being filled," the man continued, sliding a thick, unmarked envelope across the table. "The Archive wasn't just a building. It was a pressure valve. Without it, the memories of Oakhaven are leaking into the groundwater. People are waking up with fragments of lives they never lived, seeing echoes of deaths that never happened."

Elias looked at the envelope but didn't touch it. "Then let them deal with it. I’m done being the vessel."

"That’s the thing about stories, Elias," the man said, standing up to leave. "Even when you burn the book, the ink remains on your hands. You destroyed the system, but you absorbed the residue. Whether you like it or not, you are the only one who knows the topography of the void you created."

He walked out, leaving the envelope behind.

Elias looked at it for a long time. He wanted to leave it, to walk out of the diner and never look back. But he knew, with a sudden, sinking realization, that the "residue" the man spoke of was real. He could feel it—not as a magical sigil on his arm, but as a dull, insistent ache in his own mind.
