Feathertop: a moralized legend

In this story, a witch named Mother Rigby assembles a scarecrow from discarded human-like objects and magically brings it to life using smoke from a pipe. The creature, named Feathertop, is sent into the world disguised as a refined gentleman. As long as he keeps smoking, he appears entirely human: elegant, charming, and socially convincing. However, his “life” is sustained only by illusion. When Feathertop finally sees his true reflection in a mirror, he realizes he is nothing but a hollow construct of sticks, straw, and empty costume. This moment of self-recognition destroys the illusion completely. Hawthorne uses this transformation to critique social hypocrisy, artificial identity, and the way society rewards surface-level respectability over genuine substance. Feathertop becomes a symbol of people who survive through performance rather than authenticity.
