Chapter · 01

Description
Yancey Goree sits in his law office like a man who has already lost more than money. Outside, Bethel is still, lazy, almost asleep under a heavy Southern summer heat. Inside, life continues in a different way - not through work, but through a constant, quiet game of cards played just beyond his reach. Goree used to belong to that world. Now he only watches it. What remains is not ambition or strategy, but the slow humiliation of being excluded from the very game that once defined him - surrounded by people who no longer even need to defeat him, because he has already been removed from the table. It is a story about decline that doesn’t announce itself loudly, but settles in like heat in a closed room.
