Chapter 16 β (Cracks in the Group)
The next morning, the four friends met before class.
But things weren't the same anymore.
Han-seok barely spoke to Me-yongi.
Seo-jun seemed distracted.
Miho noticed everything.
Miho: βWe're supposed to be solving this together. We can't keep acting like this.β
Han-seok looked at her.
Han-seok: βI'm just being careful.β
Me-yongi lowered her eyes.
Me-yongi: βIt's okay. I understand.β
Miho frowned.
Miho: βNo, it isn't.β
Seo-jun finally spoke.
Seo-jun: βMiho's right. We need to focus on Soo-ah.β
Han-seok opened the notebook.
Han-seok: βThen let's focus.β
He pointed at the clues.
Han-seok: βThe student who died saw Soo-ah before the party.β
Seo-jun nodded.
Seo-jun: βAnd he knew she was talking to someone.β
Miho added:
Miho: βSoo-ah's sister saw a girl with her.β
Han-seok looked at Me-yongi.
Han-seok: βAnd someone doesn't want us to find out who that girl was.β
Me-yongi looked uncomfortable.
Me-yongi: βMaybe we should stop.β
Miho immediately shook her head.
Miho: βNo.β
Me-yongi looked at her.
Miho: βWe can't stop just because someone is trying to scare us.β
Han-seok nodded.
Han-seok: βAgreed.β
After School
Seo-jun went to the library to look through old school records.
Me-yongi followed him.
Seo-jun: βYou don't have to help.β
Me-yongi: βI want to.β
They sat together and searched through old class lists and activity records.
After a while, Me-yongi pointed at a name.
Me-yongi: βLook.β
Seo-jun leaned closer.
Me-yongi: βShe was in Soo-ah's club.β
Seo-jun wrote the name down.
Seo-jun: βThat's useful.β
Me-yongi smiled.
Me-yongi: βSee? I'm helping.β
Seo-jun: βYou are.β
She looked at him.
Me-yongi: βYou still trust me, right?β
Seo-jun paused.
Then nodded.
Seo-jun: βYeah.β
Me-yongi smiled.
Me-yongi: βGood.β
Meanwhileβ¦
Miho and Han-seok were walking home together.
Han-seok suddenly stopped.
Miho: βWhat?β
He looked at her.
Han-seok: βYou're still defending Me-yongi.β
Miho nodded.
Miho: βBecause I don't believe she's involved.β
Han-seok: βEven after everything?β
Miho: βShe's my friend.β
Han-seok sighed.
Han-seok: βJust promise me something.β
Miho: βWhat?β
Han-seok: βIf you ever feel like something is wrong, don't ignore it.β
Miho smiled.
Miho: βI won't.β
Han-seok nodded.
They continued walking.
After a few steps, Miho's hand accidentally brushed against his.
Neither moved away.
They looked at each other.
Han-seok smirked.
Han-seok: βYou nervous?β
Miho rolled her eyes.
Miho: βIn your dreams.β
He laughed.
That evening, Seo-jun sent everyone a photo of the information they found.
SEO-JUN: We found another connection to Soo-ah.
Miho replied immediately.
MIHO: Who?
Before Seo-jun could answer, another message appeared.
SEO-JUN: I'll tell you tomorrow.
Miho frowned.
Then her phone vibrated again.
This time, it was an unknown number.
UNKNOWN: You're trusting the wrong person.
Miho stared at the screen.
She didn't reply.
Across the city, someone else was staring at the same conversation.
And smiling.
