Chapter 11 β (The Last Witness)
Saturday β 5:00 p.m. β Seo-jun's House
The four friends were still sitting around Seo-jun's desk.
Nobody spoke.
The deleted message was still on their minds.
STUDENT: Actually⦠I think I remember who she was talking to.
And thenβ
Message deleted.
Miho stared at the screen.
βHe was about to tell us something.β
Seo-jun nodded.
βBut now we can't even ask him.β
Han-seok frowned.
βWhy not?β
Miho looked at him.
βBecause we don't know who he was talking about.β
Seo-jun looked at the student's profile.
βWe should message him again.β
Miho nodded.
She typed:
MIHO: Are you there? We need to ask you something.
They waited.
No reply.
A few minutes passed.
Still nothing.
Han-seok looked at the phone.
βMaybe he's busy.β
Seo-jun nodded.
βLet's wait.β
5:30 p.m.
Miho checked her phone again.
Nothing.
She sent another message.
MIHO: Please reply when you see this.
Still no answer.
Seo-jun looked worried.
βHe was talking to us just a while ago.β
Han-seok shrugged.
βMaybe something came up.β
Me-yongi stayed quiet.
She didn't say anything.
5:45 p.m.
Seo-jun's phone suddenly rang.
It was a classmate.
He answered.
βHello?β
The voice on the other end sounded nervous.
βSeo-junβ¦ did you hear about him?β
Seo-jun frowned.
βAbout who?β
βThe student who lives near Soo-ah's house.β
Seo-jun immediately sat up.
βWhat happened?β
There was a pause.
βHe died.β
Seo-jun froze.
βWhat?β
βIt happened suddenly.β
The call ended.
Seo-jun slowly lowered his phone.
Miho looked at him.
βWhat happened?β
Seo-jun stared at the others.
βThe studentβ¦β
He paused.
βHe's dead.β
Miho's face fell.
βThe one who was messaging us?β
Seo-jun nodded.
Han-seok stood up.
βBut he was just talking to us.β
Miho looked at the conversation.
βHe was going to tell us something.β
Seo-jun opened the chat again.
The last visible message was:
STUDENT: I saw Soo-ah before the party.
Miho looked at it.
βHe told us he lived near her house.β
Seo-jun nodded.
βAnd he saw Soo-ah that day.β
Han-seok remembered the earlier messages.
βHe said she looked depressed.β
Miho's eyes filled with concern.
βSo he knew how she was feeling before the party.β
Seo-jun looked at the deleted message.
Actually⦠I think I remember who she was talking to.
He whispered,
βHe was about to tell us who she was talking to.β
Han-seok's expression hardened.
βAnd then his message was deleted.β
Miho looked at him.
βYou think someone did it?β
Han-seok nodded.
βWho else would delete it?β
Nobody answered.
Seo-jun looked at the timestamps.
The message had disappeared while they were waiting for the student's reply.
Then, not long afterward, they learned that he had died.
Miho slowly put her phone down.
βThis can't be a coincidence.β
Seo-jun looked at her.
βI don't think it is.β
Han-seok clenched his hands.
βSomeone knew what he was about to tell us.β
The room became silent.
The student had lived close to Soo-ah.
He had seen her before the party.
He had noticed that she looked depressed.
And he had been about to reveal something about the person she was talking to.
But nowβ
They would never hear it from him.
Miho looked at the others.
βWe need to be careful.β
Seo-jun nodded.
βYeah.β
Han-seok looked toward the window.
βSomeone really doesn't want us to find out what happened to Soo-ah.β
Me-yongi remained silent.
She simply looked down at the table.
Nobody noticed.
And the mystery surrounding Soo-ah became even darker.
To be continuedβ¦
