Chapter 17

The Red Notebook โ€” Episode 17: (The Locked Room)

Yuri stared at her father.

โ€œDadโ€ฆโ€

He said nothing.

Ji-hun stood beside her, watching him carefully.

Yuri's patience disappeared.

โ€œYou know what's in that room, don't you?โ€

Her father finally looked at her.

โ€œYuri, this isn't something you should get involved in.โ€

Yuri crossed her arms.

โ€œToo late.โ€

She turned toward the hallway.

โ€œI've already found the notebook, the HAN file, and the USB. I'm not stopping now.โ€

Her father stood up.

โ€œYuri, wait.โ€

But she was already walking upstairs.

Ji-hun followed.

โ€œAre you seriously going to investigate the locked room tonight?โ€

Yuri looked back at him.

โ€œDo you have a better idea?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œDon't get yourself into trouble.โ€

Yuri rolled her eyes.

โ€œWow. Very useful.โ€

Ji-hun smirked.

โ€œI try.โ€

They reached the old hallway.

At the end stood the door Yuri remembered from her childhood.

The same door.

The same locked handle.

Yuri pulled out the small key she had found earlier.

Ji-hun's eyes immediately went to it.

โ€œYour father's key?โ€

Yuri nodded.

โ€œYou stole it?โ€

โ€œI borrowed it.โ€

โ€œWithout asking?โ€

โ€œExactly.โ€

Ji-hun shook his head.

โ€œRemind me never to leave my keys around you.โ€

Yuri smiled.

โ€œToo late.โ€

She inserted the key.

Click.

The door opened.

Yuri froze.

The room was almost completely empty.

A desk.

A few old boxes.

And a large metal cabinet.

Ji-hun stepped inside and immediately began examining the room.

โ€œDon't touch anything yet.โ€

Yuri raised an eyebrow.

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause this room hasn't been used in years. If we disturb anything, we could destroy the only clues left.โ€

Yuri looked at him.

โ€œOkay, detective.โ€

โ€œFinally, some respect.โ€

Yuri rolled her eyes.

Ji-hun examined the desk.

โ€œLook.โ€

An old photograph was lying underneath a pile of papers.

Yuri picked it up.

It showed her father, Mrs. Han, and another man.

Yuri frowned.

โ€œWho's he?โ€

Ji-hun studied the photograph carefully.

โ€œLook at the background.โ€

Yuri leaned closer.

There was a sign behind them.

Room 214.

Yuri's eyes widened.

โ€œThe same room from the hotel.โ€

Ji-hun nodded.

โ€œExactly.โ€

Yuri turned the photograph over.

There was a date written on the back.

August 16 โ€” seven years ago.

Yuri's heart dropped.

โ€œThat was the night everything happened.โ€

Ji-hun looked at the date.

โ€œAnd your father was there.โ€

Yuri opened the nearest box.

Inside were old documents.

Then she found a handwritten note.

โ€œWe couldn't prove anything.โ€

Yuri looked at Ji-hun.

โ€œWhat couldn't they prove?โ€

Ji-hun didn't answer immediately.

He examined the note, then the photograph.

โ€œThe photograph proves your father was investigating something at Room 214. But if they couldn't prove anything, they probably didn't have enough evidence to connect what happened there to Mrs. Han.โ€

Yuri stared at him.

โ€œThen why was her name everywhere?โ€

โ€œBecause she knew something.โ€

โ€œBut she was only a client.โ€

โ€œExactly.โ€

Ji-hun looked at Yuri.

โ€œThat means Mrs. Han may have been a witnessโ€”not the person responsible.โ€

Yuri went silent.

For the first time, the pieces were starting to fit.

She opened another file.

One page had been completely removed.

Yuri frowned.

โ€œSomeone took this.โ€

Ji-hun immediately examined the folder.

โ€œThe tear is fresh.โ€

Yuri looked at him.

โ€œSo?โ€

โ€œSo this wasn't done seven years ago.โ€

He pointed at the edge of the missing page.

โ€œLook at the paper. It's aged, but the tear isn't. Someone removed this page recently.โ€

Yuri's eyes widened.

โ€œSomeone came into this room.โ€

Ji-hun nodded.

โ€œAnd they knew exactly what they were looking for.โ€

Yuri looked toward the metal cabinet.

โ€œLet's see what else is missing.โ€

She opened it.

Inside was a single black folder.

On the front were three words:

THE HAN CASE

Yuri slowly reached for it.

Then she noticed something underneath.

A small piece of paper.

Her own name was written on it.

YURI.

She unfolded it.

Only one sentence was written inside:

โ€œYour father didn't hide the truth from you to protect himself.โ€

Yuri looked at Ji-hun.

โ€œWhat does that mean?โ€

Ji-hun studied the note for a few seconds.

Then he pointed at her name.

โ€œIt means your father wasn't hiding the truth because he was guilty.โ€

Yuri frowned.

โ€œThen why?โ€

Ji-hun looked at the note again.

โ€œBecause if this were about protecting himself, your name wouldn't be here.โ€

Yuri went silent.

Ji-hun's expression became serious.

โ€œYour father didn't just hide the case, Yuri.โ€

He looked at the locked room.

โ€œHe hid the part of the case that was connected to you.โ€

Yuri's fingers tightened around the note.

She looked down at the black folder.

Whatever was inside had been hidden for seven years.

And nowโ€”

Yuri was finally ready to find out why.

To be continuedโ€ฆ
