Chapter 3
Almost, Almost
Desire arrived without drama.
It lived in the pauses between words, in the way Minjun leaned over Yichen’s shoulder to look at a sketch, breath warm against his neck. It lived in shared cigarettes on the balcony, smoke curling into the night, fingers brushing when they passed the lighter back and forth.
They didn’t talk about it.
They talked about buildings that would never be built, about cities they might never see. They talked around the truth until it grew heavy enough to bend the air between them.
One night, rain pressed itself against the windows. The city blurred into reflections and shadows. Minjun laughed at something small, and Yichen felt it — an unbearable clarity.
He reached out.
Not boldly.
Not safely.
Minjun didn’t step back.
Their kiss was slow, like something remembered rather than discovered. It tasted of smoke and rain and the quiet terror of wanting. When they finally pulled apart, their foreheads rested together, breathing the same breath.
“This changes things,” Minjun said.
“Yes,” Yichen answered.
And did not say whether that frightened him.
