Chapter 2
Chapter 2 The Enemy in the Dark
The gunshot echoed through Blackwood Tower.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Elena could hear nothing except her own heartbeat.
Adrian stood in front of her, blocking her from the windows. His expression had completely changed. The cold confidence he had shown moments earlier was gone.
"Stay behind me," he whispered.
"Adrian, what was that?"
"Don't speak."
A second sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Someone was approaching.
Adrian reached inside his jacket and pulled out a small black handgun.
Elena stared at him.
"You have a gun?"
Adrian didn't answer.
The emergency lights suddenly flickered on, covering the office in a dim red glow.
Daniel rushed through the door.
"Sir!"
Adrian turned.
"Where did the shot come from?"
"The east corridor. Security is checking it now."
"Lock down the entire building."
"Already done."
Adrian looked at Elena.
"Take her to the private elevator."
Elena immediately shook her head.
"No."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"This isn't a discussion."
"I came here for answers, and I'm not leaving until I get them."
"You're going to get yourself killed."
"Then tell me why someone is trying to kill me."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Because you know too much."
Elena stared at him.
"I don't know anything."
"Exactly."
Daniel looked between them.
"Sir, we need to move."
Adrian nodded.
"Take her."
Daniel reached for Elena's arm.
Suddenly, the glass window behind them shattered.
Elena screamed.
Adrian pulled her to the floor.
A bullet struck the wall where her head had been seconds earlier.
Daniel drew his weapon and moved toward the window.
"Sniper!"
Adrian looked outside.
Across the street, another building stood in darkness.
"Find him."
Security teams immediately rushed toward the opposite building.
Adrian grabbed Elena's hand.
"Move."
This time, she didn't argue.
They ran through a private hallway and entered a hidden elevator.
The doors closed.
Elena leaned against the wall, breathing heavily.
"Who are you?"
Adrian looked at her.
"What?"
"You heard me."
She stared directly into his eyes.
"Normal CEOs don't carry guns. They don't have secret elevators. They don't have armed security teams. And they certainly don't react to my father's photograph like that."
Adrian remained silent.
Elena stepped closer.
"Who are you really?"
The elevator descended.
Finally, Adrian spoke.
"My public identity is Adrian Blackwood."
Elena frowned.
"And your real identity?"
Adrian looked at the elevator doors.
"That's the problem."
Before Elena could ask another question, the elevator stopped.
The doors opened into an underground garage.
Several black vehicles waited there.
Adrian pushed Elena toward one of them.
"Get inside."
She hesitated.
"Where are we going?"
"Somewhere safe."
"I don't trust you."
"You shouldn't."
Elena froze.
Adrian opened the car door.
"Get in."
She finally entered.
Daniel sat behind the wheel.
Adrian got in beside Elena.
The vehicle accelerated out of the underground garage.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Elena watched the city disappear behind them.
Then she noticed something.
Adrian was holding the old photograph.
His fingers trembled slightly.
"You knew my father," she said.
Adrian didn't deny it.
"Yes."
"How?"
"He worked for my family."
"My father was an accountant."
"He was more than that."
Elena turned toward him.
"What does that mean?"
Adrian looked at her.
"Your father discovered something he wasn't supposed to discover."
"What?"
"An organization."
Elena's heart sank.
"What organization?"
Adrian's voice became quieter.
"The people who destroyed my family."
The car became silent.
Elena looked at him carefully.
"Your family was destroyed?"
"My father was murdered when I was seventeen."
She stared at him.
"My father disappeared when I was seventeen."
Adrian's eyes met hers.
"That's not a coincidence."
Elena felt a chill.
"You think our fathers were connected?"
"I know they were."
"Then tell me everything."
Adrian looked away.
"Not yet."
"Why?"
"Because if I tell you everything, there's no going back."
Elena crossed her arms.
"I already crossed that line when I walked into your office."
Adrian almost smiled.
Almost.
Then his phone vibrated.
He checked the screen.
A message had arrived from an unknown number.
YOU CAN'T PROTECT HER.
A second message appeared.
SHE WILL DIE LIKE HER FATHER.
Adrian's expression hardened.
Elena noticed.
"What is it?"
"Nothing."
"You're lying."
Adrian put the phone away.
The vehicle suddenly slowed.
Daniel looked into the rearview mirror.
"We're being followed."
Adrian turned.
Two black SUVs were approaching rapidly.
"How many?"
"Two."
"Take the old route."
Daniel nodded.
The car turned sharply into a narrow street.
The SUVs followed.
Elena gripped the seat.
"Who are they?"
Adrian looked at her.
"The people who want you dead."
One of the SUVs accelerated.
Daniel stepped on the gas.
The chase continued through the city.
A bullet struck the rear window.
Elena ducked.
Adrian pulled her down.
"Stay low!"
Another bullet hit the vehicle.
Daniel swerved.
"We're almost there!"
"What is there?" Elena asked.
Adrian looked ahead.
"My real home."
The car entered an underground tunnel.
The SUVs stopped at the entrance.
Inside the tunnel, Adrian finally relaxed.
Elena slowly raised her head.
"Your real home?"
Adrian nodded.
"You've seen my penthouse."
"Yes."
"That's not where I live."
The tunnel ended at a massive steel gate.
Security cameras scanned the vehicle.
The gate opened.
Beyond it was a hidden underground mansion surrounded by high walls and security systems.
Elena stared in disbelief.
"Who lives like this?"
Adrian stepped out.
"I do."
He walked toward the entrance.
Elena followed.
Inside, the mansion was nothing like his public penthouse.
There were security monitors covering one wall.
Maps covered another.
Photographs of different people were pinned across a large board.
Elena stopped.
One photograph caught her attention.
Her father.
She slowly approached it.
Adrian watched her.
"Now you understand."
Elena touched the photograph.
"Why is my father here?"
Adrian walked toward her.
"Because fifteen years ago, he trusted me with a secret."
"What secret?"
Adrian took a deep breath.
"He discovered who was responsible for the murder of my father."
Elena turned toward him.
"And who was it?"
Before Adrian could answer, every monitor in the room suddenly turned black.
Then a single message appeared across all the screens.
HELLO, ADRIAN.
Elena stepped backward.
Adrian's face became cold.
A second message appeared.
DID YOU REALLY THINK YOU COULD HIDE FOREVER?
Then a final photograph appeared.
It was Elena.
Taken only minutes earlier.
Outside Blackwood Tower.
Elena's blood ran cold.
"They were watching me."
Adrian nodded.
"They've been watching you for a long time."
The screen changed again.
This time, the message contained only six words:
THE GIRL IS THE KEY.
Elena looked at Adrian.
"The key to what?"
Adrian stared at the screen.
For the first time, he seemed genuinely afraid.
"The truth."
The lights went out again.
And somewhere inside the hidden mansion, a door slowly opened.
