Chapter 1
Chicken Head (Eng)
I open my eyes.
A faint haze clouds my vision, as if everything is happening in a dream. My head is throbbing, and a burning pain spreads across the back of my skull.
I blink once. In front of me stands a crowd of people, staring at me in terror.
Why are they here?
A woman, around forty-five, suddenly screams:
“He blinked! He blinked!”
“That’s impossible!” a man’s voice shouts.
“Begone, Satan!” yells an old woman to the left, crossing herself over and over again.
A wave of nausea hits me. My head spins. I hear footsteps approaching from behind.
A moment later, a man dressed entirely in black steps forward, holding an axe in his hand.
Is he… going to kill me?
I turn my head. The crowd erupts into hysterical screams. People start grabbing stones from the ground and hurling them at me. Thick blood pours from the wounds, streaming down into my eyes, blinding me. I can’t see what they’re doing — I shake my head, desperate to make out the man in black.
Finally, I manage to turn. The executioner raises his axe above me.
There’s still a second before he strikes — and that’s when, about fifteen meters away, I see it:
A headless body on a wooden block.
